CAB-O-SIL® M-5 is a medium-surface-area, untreated fumed silica from Cabot Corporation. It is a very light, sub-micron powder that gives a large increase in viscosity in liquid systems, providing thickening, thixotropic (shear-thinning) and anti-settling behavior.
In epoxy work it is stirred into mixed resin to thicken it, reduce flow on vertical surfaces and make a smooth putty for filling gaps and pinholes. There is no set ratio: add it a little at a time until the mix reaches the body you need.
It is a very fine, light dust. Cabot advises avoiding dust formation and not breathing the dust; use local exhaust ventilation, or an approved respirator where ventilation is not adequate.
